Maker

Auro Chocolate

Auro Chocolate is a Filipino bean to bar chocolate company that practices sustainable harvesting of cacao which they get directly from farms in Davao Philippines. Owners Mark Ocampo and Kelly Go, originally political science majors, with no background in pastries or chocolate at all, took a trip to the Philippines where their love for small craft chocolate was born. Auro is committed to restore local heirloom varieties of Filipino cacao and showcase Filipino taste varieties and culture from the Davao region in some of their single estate chocolate bars. Auro provides support and education to its farmers to teach them organic farming and important business management fundamentals in order to improve their standards of living. Auro is globally recognized and have won awards for their chocolate. Mark and Kelly wanted their chocolate company to reflect something with gold. They believe that like gold, farmers and cacao are not given the recognition they deserve. Both gold and cacao are not fully cherished in its raw form until its been altered, that’s when people see its true value.

Cacao Region

Davao, Philippines

One of the smallest big cities in the Philippines, Davao City is affectionately known as both the cacao and durian capital of the country. In fact, often you'll see both fruit trees growing on the same plantations within city limits, yet due to large soil & cacao varietal differences, you'll find that the resulting chocolates taste nothing alike. The region is so widespread that there's even a citywide speed limit that makes a trip from one end to the other take nearly two hours without traffic!

Cacao Estate

Enriquez Cacao Farm

The Enriquez Cacao Farm is located in Barangay Saloy, Davao, Philippines. Situated between tropical mountain forests, Saloy has a special terroir, giving its cacao a truly unique flavour profile. It is part of an agricultural region in the Philippines wherein farming of cacao, coconut, and a variety of local fruits and vegetables are the main livelihood sources. Head farmer Alben Enriquez has been involved in farming his whole life and comes from a family of farmers, some of whom work with him to manage the farm. Alben sees his relationship with the earth as a mutually beneficial one; he produces and only uses his own organic fertilizer by composting farm waste. Plus he controls weeds by planting shade trees, maintaining appropriate fertility levels of the soil, mulching, and hand weeding if necessary. He believes in promoting biodiversity, and has many other trees present in his farm, such as durian, coconut and mangosteen.

Mouth feel is ever so slightly course, but in a way that lets flavor linger. Has overtones of leather and tobacco, “like a peat whisky” according to my husband. Nice snap, warm, earthy finish.
