DESCRIPTION:

The eco-region Lachua, around lake Lachua is home to Q’eqchi’ Maya families, many of whom live off grid and rely on production of cacao, honey, cardamom, corn and other crops for their livelihoods, all harvested from 200 hectares around the lake.

We only bought three sacks from Uncommon Cacao back in 2016 and had them frozen immediately to preserve their flavor. Three years later we are finally able to pull them out and make some amazing chocolate. It is estimated we will get around 3000 bars out of these beans which means this will be a Limited Edition.The chocolate is smooth & creamy with notes of licorice and blackberry.

Hogarth Chocolate is a small craft chocolate maker in Nelson, New Zealand. The founders Karl and Marina started making chocolate after Karl was inspired by craft chocolate after a trip to South America when he tasted pure cacao for the first time. Karl was inspired by the true flavors of chocolate is capable of. Their chocolate hobby evolved into a business so Karl could spend more time at home with his family, a completely different direction from his 20 years of former seafaring life. Karl tinkers with and makes machines to make the chocolate making process more efficient and precise. The team at Hogarth is always on a mission to find new inspiration from the world to be transformed into their next chocolate bar.

Surprising sweetness

The bar is great quality - perfect snap, great texture, smooth melt. There is a surprising sweetness to the entirety of the taste, but not in a sugary sweet way. I would definitely recommend this for people who think they don't like darker chocolate, but want to experience darker chocolate that isn't bitter or acidic or earthy. There is a little bit of fruityness to the taste, but the sweetness makes it hard to compare with other fruity more acidic chocolates.
