The story of the Cedeño Aguilar family farm, also called Finca Garyth, is an unusual tale in the rainforests of South America. In 2005 the family converted their monocrop palm oil plantation into an organic cacao farm, growing only native nacional cacaos. They even earned a certificate of denomination of protected origin for their arriba nacional varietals, the first such certificate issued in the country. Their land is now dedicated to growing Ecuador’s regional cacaos in a sustainable agroforestry system, using only organic fertilizers and absolutely no pesticides.
