Maker

Original Beans

Original Beans is passionate about being actively involved in the conservation of their cacao sources from Congo to Bolivia. They pride themselves on an ethical direct trade of their beans to ensure cacao farmers can achieve a livable income. They currently support 175 farming families full time. Original Beans finds the world’s rarest cacao beans to transform their unique flavors into incredible chocolate. What makes Original Beans unique, are the world's 50 best chefs that come together and work in creating the best chocolate bars. Through Original Beans hard efforts, they have already preserved heirloom and regional cacao varieties from nearing extinction! It all started back in 2008 when Philipp Kauffmann pursued his dream in creating a 100% regenerative business that gives more to the Earth than it takes. Kauffmann is the 7th generation of recognized forest scientists and explorers. Original Beans wrappers are environmentally friendly, packaged with the first garden compostable foil, made of woodfoil and cardboard which reduces negative environmental impacts by 82%. Every single bar you buy plants a tree in the rainforest, following the "one bar one tree" creed, and have already grown over 2 million trees! One of their bars, Femme de Virguna planted a quarter of a million cacao trees, and ultimately saved Congo’s forest from utter destruction!

Cacao Region

Alto Beni River, Bolivia

The Beni River Valley in northern Bolivia is home to the river of the same name, north of the Bolivian capital of La Paz. Upstream, far beyond the main cities, cacao grows wild along the upper part of the Beni River, there called the “Alto Beni.” Locals often travel along the water in boats, stopping every once in a while to collect fresh pods from the trees; that practice has earned Alto Beni’s harvest the nickname “wild cacao.” This is one of the southernmost places that cacao is grown in the Americas.

Cacao Strain

Beniano

The native wild-grown cacao of Bolivia, Beniano is perhaps better known as nacional de Bolivia or even cacao silvestre. That’s because this strain grows wild along the upper part of the Río Bení in northern Bolivia; locals collect pods via canoe, as they ripen. The further south you go, the more indigenous genetic material the fruits tend to contain. Beniano have relatively small pods, meaning less yield per fruit, and a sweet, nutty, and fruity flavor. The overall rich and balanced character of the beans means that even slight changes in fermentation or roasting can cause a huge difference in the final taste of a product, resulting in an overall crowd-pleasing cacao.

Simply the best

I have enjoyed dark chocolate from many places over many years. Original Beans Beni Wild Harvest is without a doubt my favorite. I will not attempt to describe the texture or flavor in pretentious descriptive words. It tastes like chocolate, the best chocolate.

Original Beans Beni Wild 66%

Particularly exquisite flavor. Floral honey, subtle lemon and roasted hazelnuts. Glossy texture. I recommend this bar to everyone I know, and don't know - which can get pretty weird but I know this one is a goodie and feel compelled to share that with the world.

Original Beans Beni Wild Harvest 66%

Amazing bar with notes of honey, lemon, orange, apricot, cantaloupe, tropical fruits, redcurrants, prunes, vanilla, and jasmine tea.

Another good one from Original Beans

I enjoyed the soft, mellow flavors in this bar: a mix of fruity, floral, rich cocoa, and creamy milk, like lemon cheesecake, fruit cooked with butter, hot cocoa, and brownies. An intriguing aroma too, notes of fruit, flowers, fresh grass, and green tea.

Garden party

A master tea blender’s dream of wildflower honey, dried tropical fruit (peach, apricot, mango), and lemon verbena. It’s the kind of chocolate you might like for a whimsical afternoon tea.
