Hogarth Chocolate is a small craft chocolate maker in Nelson, New Zealand. The founders Karl and Marina started making chocolate after Karl was inspired by craft chocolate after a trip to South America when he tasted pure cacao for the first time. Karl was inspired by the true flavors of chocolate is capable of. Their chocolate hobby evolved into a business so Karl could spend more time at home with his family, a completely different direction from his 20 years of former seafaring life. Karl tinkers with and makes machines to make the chocolate making process more efficient and precise. The team at Hogarth is always on a mission to find new inspiration from the world to be transformed into their next chocolate bar.

Cacao Estate


Produits Des Iles SA (PISA) is one of the few groups in Haiti working to export single-origin Haitian cacao, a battle they’ve been taking on since their inception in 2012. Prior to PISA’s establishment, basically all Haitian cacao was sold in the commodity market at dirt-cheap prices, despite the fact that neighboring Dominican Republic’s industry was booming. So the group decided to take on the task themselves, buying wet cacao from local farmers and processing it centrally in a northern facility. PISA’s beans are described by importer Uncommon Cacao as the “perfect storm of chocolate, caramelized sugars, and juicy dark berries,” and we couldn’t agree more. While makers’ choices play a large role in the final flavor, these notes are steadfast and hard to ignore. All PISA cacao is certified organic.

Very interesting

I ordered this because the flavors sounded so intriguing… and they are. At first, my taste buds were a bit offput by the odd combo, but the more I tried it, the more I grew to like it. If you like the taste of root beer, you would probably enjoy this bar. The orange adds a nice twist.

Mostly Sarsaparilla flavor, little orange

Hogarth kills it with the gold packaging and bar design. They could be less stingy with their candied orange inclusion- just a tiny bit was sprinkled on the back. The chocolate was incredibly smooth and addicting as always and the flavors were perfect: not too strong. Highly recommend.

Hard snap. Dark brown color. Floral, spicy, and sweet orange scents. this bar starts with very sugary vanilla notes mixed with orange and licorice aromas and a mild woody ginger flavor. The finish is literally mouthwatering. A bit of astringency at the bottom of your throat with subtle pleasant tangy notes of the candied orange pieces and warming pungent spicy ginger taste on the tip of your tongue. If you are not a licorice lover, don`t worry. It blends amazingly with the other ingredients and it will close the tasting experience lingering on the tip of your tongue and at the bottom of your throat.
