This bar is made with a unique cacao from a region in Eastern Congo. This cacao is grown around Virunga Park to protect the last mountain gorillas. These chocolate makers care as much about conservation as they do about chocolate. Every single bar we buy for you plants a tree in the rain forest. The flavor of this bar is sweet, deep cherry with hints of toasted almond and black tea.

Original BeansOriginal Beans is passionate about being actively involved in the conservation of their cacao sources from Congo to Bolivia. They pride themselves on an ethical direct trade of their beans to ensure cacao farmers can achieve a livable income. They currently support 175 farming families full time. Original Beans finds the world’s rarest cacao beans to transform their unique flavors into incredible chocolate. What makes Original Beans unique, are the world's 50 best chefs that come together and work in creating the best chocolate bars. Through Original Beans hard efforts, they have already preserved heirloom and regional cacao varieties from nearing extinction! It all started back in 2008 when Philipp Kauffmann pursued his dream in creating a 100% regenerative business that gives more to the Earth than it takes. Kauffmann is the 7th generation of recognized forest scientists and explorers. Original Beans wrappers are environmentally friendly, packaged with the first garden compostable foil, made of woodfoil and cardboard which reduces negative environmental impacts by 82%. Every single bar you buy plants a tree in the rainforest, following the "one bar one tree" creed, and have already grown over 2 million trees! One of their bars, Femme de Virguna planted a quarter of a million cacao trees, and ultimately saved Congo’s forest from utter destruction!
Cacao Region
Virunga, Democratic Republic of the CongoVirunga National Park is located in the Albertine Rift Valley in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was created in 1925 and is among the first protected areas in Africa. Most of the people living within the park rely upon tourism or agriculture to make a living, including those who farm cacao within its limits. Swiss chocolate maker Original Beans maintains a long-term partnership with thousands of farmers in this region, buying their organic-certified cacao with the return promise of sustainable cultivation within the Park.
CCustomerSuch a fun bar to enjoy. We could only think, ‘chocolate covered cherry’ - and not the ones from the supermarket. Dark fudgey chocolate, with luscious fruity cherry. Delicious!
CCharlotteI adore Original Beans chocolate and mission. Buy a bar and plant a tree! I'm a sucker for brands with purpose. Anyhow, this bar is my second favorite Original Beans bar (only slightly falling behind the Arhucao Businchiari 82% as I can't get enough of its tahini-licorice notes) and it is mindblowing. The flavor is black tea and dark cherry but also this exquisite toasted rice and hazelnut something, which I've been told is like the air around rice fields in spring. Also, like all their bars, the texture is a buttery gloss that feels smoothed to the sub-atomic level. Amen to this.
RRene H.I searched quite a lot to find a U.S. distributer. I was elated to find barandcoca. Delivery arrived just a few days later. This chocolate from Congo is unmatched, I enjoy the 70% dark, which I cannot say for some other brands. And to think that you’re supporting the Virunga National Park’s ecosystem; primates, Eles and so many creatures, it just makes sense to make this your go-to chocolate.
PPat K.The chocolate bar will be for a class later on and the mini-chocolates are to be gifts.
GGayleOriginal beans is always such good value. Lots of awesome chocolate for the price. This one is de-licious! Fruit/cherry on the nose. Very fudgy on the tongue. Melts smoothly and calls you back for more with a long soft tannin tealike lingering. I will definitely buy this one again! It may be my favorite Original Beans but all of them seem to be superior chocolate.
