Maker

Original Beans

Original Beans is passionate about being actively involved in the conservation of their cacao sources from Congo to Bolivia. They pride themselves on an ethical direct trade of their beans to ensure cacao farmers can achieve a livable income. They currently support 175 farming families full time. Original Beans finds the world’s rarest cacao beans to transform their unique flavors into incredible chocolate. What makes Original Beans unique, are the world's 50 best chefs that come together and work in creating the best chocolate bars. Through Original Beans hard efforts, they have already preserved heirloom and regional cacao varieties from nearing extinction! It all started back in 2008 when Philipp Kauffmann pursued his dream in creating a 100% regenerative business that gives more to the Earth than it takes. Kauffmann is the 7th generation of recognized forest scientists and explorers. Original Beans wrappers are environmentally friendly, packaged with the first garden compostable foil, made of woodfoil and cardboard which reduces negative environmental impacts by 82%. Every single bar you buy plants a tree in the rainforest, following the "one bar one tree" creed, and have already grown over 2 million trees! One of their bars, Femme de Virguna planted a quarter of a million cacao trees, and ultimately saved Congo’s forest from utter destruction!

Cacao Region

Tabasco, Mexico

The Mexican state of Tabasco is located in the southeast of the country, bordering the Petén department of Guatemala to the south. Most of the state is covered in rainforest, as well as lots of small lakes, wetland areas, and rivers. While the state's main industry is petroleum extraction & refination, there are several commercially-important crops grown in Tabasco, such as cacao, coconut, oranges, bananas, and sugarcane.

beautiful dark intensity

This is a zinger! Not for everyone, perhaps, but I loved it! Very smooth and approachable for a 88% bar, with lots of rich savoriness and an intense, pure cacao flavor, without excessive bitterness. The aroma itself is thrilling - leather, rich soil, a hint of smoke. Also makes a great drinking chocolate. Great for anyone who enjoys darker flavors and intensity.

Zoque 88%

Love all the Original Beans I have tried. The 82, 88 and 100%. The 88% is slightly fruity and buttery.

Dark and sultry bar. Aromatic. I get herbal, coffee, bright lychee and mellow coconut notes. Distinctive Original Beans buttery texture. Delectable.

Original Beans Zoque 88%

I always recommend this bar as a high percentage cacao option. Over time, I noticed slight differences between different batches regarding the fruitness but never disappointed me in taste. You can expect aromatic bitter taste, lichee, coconut, nuts, and coffee.

Lovely bitter cocoa

Bitter, nutty, and buttery with a faint acidity and touch of liqueur. Very good.
