Direct-Source Cacao

Direct Sourced

Cacao was introduced to Madagascar by French colonialists in the 19th century. The country produces nearly 3,000 tons of beans a year. Most of the trees are concentrated in the Sambirano Valley in the northwest, where soil and climate are ideal for growing high quality cacao. This chocolate bar is made from organic cacao beans from Bejofo Estate, owned and managed by Bertil Akesson, who is also makes bean-to-bar chocolate using his own cacao beans. Flavor notes you may taste: bright fruit, light brownie.

Ingredients: Organic cacao beans, organic cane sugar, organic cacao butter

Maker

Raphio Chocolate

Raphio Chocolate is made from scratch with only organic and natural ingredients. Chocolate maker Elisia hand selects her cacao beans to make pure, healthy chocolate in Fresno, California. Introduced to craft chocolate by her husband in 2014, the simplicity of ingredients used is what inspired Elisia. She wanted to create a minimally processed chocolate bar that was healthy for kids to consume as well. Raphio was inspired by her two sons Raphael and Rio. She wanted to give her sons treats without the harsh sugars and other ingredients involved as well as the desire to promote healthy chocolate especially for parents! Raphio has already earned national and international awards for their chocolate.

Cacao Region

Sambirano Valley, Madagascar

Perhaps the most famous growing region in the world, northern Madagascar's Sambirano Valley is known for its incredibly fruity cacao and aromatic herbs & spices. Over the past few decades three main plantations have popped up in the area to supply cacao to chocolate makers around the world, as well as some of the world's most valuable botanicals, namely vanilla, ylang-ylang, and essential oil extracts.

Cacao Estate

Akesson Estate

Perhaps one of the most famous origins in the world, Akesson’s Estate consists of several individual farms in northwestern Madagascar’s Sambirano Valley. The most prolific of these is certainly Bejofo Estate, which alone produces around 300 tons of cocoa each year. Over the last decade, Malagasy cacao (cacao grown on Madagascar) has earned a reputation for fruity, almost juicy cacao beans, which transform into some of the most unique chocolate in the world. All of the cacao grown on Akesson Estate is organic-certified.
