Translated directly as “South of the Lake,” Sur Del Lago is a region of western Venezuela which touches upon four separate states. The name refers to Lake Maracaibo, and the region as a whole is often referred to as the cradle of criollo cacao, thanks to its many native varietals of fine flavor criollo cacao. Amongst these criollos are the Guasare and Porcelana varietals, some of the rarest cacaos in the world.
