A family of Swiss immigrants to the Dominican Republic planted Finca Elvesia in the late 1800’s, a sort of paradise within a paradise. The farm is located in the agricultural community of El Valle, in the Hato Mayor region, and stretches over more than 150 hectares. Since its inception, the farm has changed hands several times, but the quality of its cacao has remained consistently high. Today, Finca Elvesia is run by local cacao expert Ramon Lopez, with help from his talented deputy, Isidro Castillo, and a team of over three dozen Dominican and Haitian farmhands. The Finca currently grows cacao varietals brought primarily from Venezuela during the Dominican Republic’s earliest cocoa-growing days, in the mid 1600’s, making it a remarkable piece of Dominican agricultural history.
