Collection: Arauca, Colombia
With the exception of the westernmost region, most of Arauca state is comprised of plains, whose soil has shown to be good conditions for growing cacao, banana, cassava, rice, corn, and various other fruits. However, the main economic activity of Arauca is centered around the oil industry, with the state’s Caño Limón oil fields being the second-largest in the country. The name Arauca is believed to derive from the name of the Indigenous Arawak (Arhuaco in Spanish) people, whose descendants still inhabit several regions across Colombia, including much of Arauca state.
