Boyacá is centrally located within Colombia, almost entirely within the Andes Mountains of the Eastern Cordillera Range, at the border with Venezuela. The state is widely known as "The Land of Freedom," because this region was the scene of a series of battles which led to Colombia's independence from Spain. The emerald mines and remaining colonial towns are now a popular tourist attraction, but outside of the few cities, most of the region depends upon agriculture to make a living.
