Coto Brus is a valley region of the Puntarenas province of southern Costa Rica, along the border with Panama. Overall, the region is quite poor, with the economy primarily based on agriculture and cattle farming; the main crops include coffee, sugarcane, corn, and plantains. Due to the relative lack of infrastructure, however, the region is also home to some ancient varietals of cacao which survived the plague of fungus which wiped out much of Costa Rica’s cacao in the 1970’s.
