Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas is a province in northwestern Ecuador, relatively flat but for the small portion situated at the foot of the Andes Mountain Range. The name of the province refers to a local ethnic group, the Tsáchilas, also known as the colorados or “dyed ones,” on account of the custom of men dyeing their hair with bright red achiote paste. This is one of the smallest and newest provinces of Ecuador, only formed in 2007.
