South Cotabato is in the southern area of the Mindanao island region of the Philippines, and up until the middle of the 20th century, it was very sparsely populated. After WWII, an exodus of settlers from the other two island regions poured into the area's virgin land, mostly seeking a new life in agriculture. Now one of the country’s most populous provinces, South Cotabato is primarily known for its fresh fruits and vegetables, such as pineapple, papaya, corn, coffee, bananas, and the ever-present coconut.
