Marou's first milk chocolate is made with Ben Tre cacao and coconut milk. Very creamy, sweet and slight fruity acidity. The coconut milk makes for a wonderful vegan alternative to dairy. Coconuts are found in abundance in Vietnam and in the region of Ben Tre, so it was a nice compliment to their cocoa.

Marou Chocolate

Marou Chocolat was started by two Frenchmen Samuel Maruta and Vincent Mourou in Saigon. After a camping trip in Vietnam, that left them venturing onto a cacao farm, they were sold on their next adventure, chocolate. They only had minimal everyday kitchen appliances at the time and started testing how to make chocolate in Sam’s kitchen. They work closely with farmers and slow roast the beans in small batches to get the natural flavors from its terroir and let it do all the work. They are the first bean to bar Vietnamese chocolate makers. Their bars captivate flavors from each region they receive their cacao beans from.

Cacao Region

Ben Tre, Vietnam

Ben Tre is a province in the Mekong Delta area of southern Vietnam, southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. During the Tet Offensive in 1968, Ben Tre City was nearly destroyed by anti-communist bombing, but the province has since recovered, now home to a strong tourism market due to its location along the Mekong Delta. Otherwise, much of the region's economy is based in rice production and tropical agriculture, including notable amounts of coconut and cacao.

Tropical toffee

Marou gives a fresh Vietnamese twist to the age-old category of European milk chocolates. An initial explosion of coconut cream clears the trail for a medley of intense flavors (lemongrass, ginger, cassia, sago, sugarcane juice), all of which are seamlessly woven onto a bed of soft caramel fudge. It’s the epitome of gastronomic chocolate.

Marou Coconut Milk Ben Tre 55%

Not my fav coconut milk chocolate bar but the flavor profile is very complex: banana, papaya, mango, coconut, raisin, cream, toffee, caramel, spices.
