Auro ChocolateAuro Chocolate is a Filipino bean to bar chocolate company that practices sustainable harvesting of cacao which they get directly from farms in Davao Philippines. Owners Mark Ocampo and Kelly Go, originally political science majors, with no background in pastries or chocolate at all, took a trip to the Philippines where their love for small craft chocolate was born. Auro is committed to restore local heirloom varieties of Filipino cacao and showcase Filipino taste varieties and culture from the Davao region in some of their single estate chocolate bars. Auro provides support and education to its farmers to teach them organic farming and important business management fundamentals in order to improve their standards of living. With Auro's aid and support to these cacao farmers, they are overall improving the cacao industry for the Philippines. Auro is globally recognized and have won awards for their chocolate. The name Auro comes from a combination of AU, the chemical symbol for gold on the periodic table and oro, meaning gold in both Spanish and Filipino. Mark and Kelly wanted their chocolate company to reflect something with gold. They believe that like gold, farmers and cacao are not given the recognition they deserve. Both gold and cacao are not fully cherished in its raw form until its been altered, that’s when people see its true value.
Cacao Region
Davao, PhilippinesOne of the smallest big cities in the Philippines, Davao City is affectionately known as both the cacao and durian capital of the country. In fact, often you'll see both fruit trees growing on the same plantations within city limits, yet due to large soil & cacao varietal differences, you'll find that the resulting chocolates taste nothing alike. The region is so widespread that there's even a citywide speed limit that makes a trip from one end to the other take nearly two hours without traffic!
JJames W.Auro 85% Mana estate is very smooth, with a nice flavor that did not seem bitter. The slight fruitiness makes it seem milder than expected for 85%.
JJ.N.This one came off weird to my wife and I, we would not recommend
TTheadoraOh the chocolatey, fudginess of this bar! It has a nice acidity that cuts through the sweetness and balances the deep chocolate flavors. A citrus and yogurty touch add the perfect amount of depth. Highly recommend!
PP.To taste this chocolate is to put a piece of a flaming lamborghini in your mouth. The burnt edges of the muscovado sugar advance gradually upon the reservoir of what begins as a dark red wine. At a certain high point, the torch comes out and the wine ignites into a VSOP cognac (or amber rice wine, perhaps, in the local context). Applause everywhere.
