The cacao beans used to make this chocolate is grown by 500 smallholder farmers in the lush growing region of Bundibugyo in Uganda. Each farm is 1-2 hectares, either owned as family land or leased from other farmers.

Wet beans are bought and transferred to a central post harvest facility in a converted B&B in the village of Bumate. The location is at the base of the hills leading into the mountains taking advantage of maximum sunshine and limiting runoff.

This chocolate bar is community supported. Chocolate makers are given an opportunity to pay a bonus per kg to be used directly to support the farmers that make Semuliki Forest cacao possible. This year the fund will be used to pay school fees for the farmer's children.

Maker

SOMA Chocolatemaker

Soma was founded by David Castellan and Cynthia Leung in 2003. A rarity in the industry, Soma are adept at both chocolate making, and also a fantastic chocolatier. At the time, ‘bean to bar’ chocolate wasn’t necessarily even a term! Anybody who knew how to make chocolate were those who worked for big chocolate companies. Soma was one of the first to tackle the micro batch chocolate bar production. Besides their wonderful line of chocolate bars, Soma also uses their chocolate to make ganache for truffles, and other chocolate treats. Soma's high quality chocolate bars have been awarded multiple times over the years. First starting off in a 400 square foot tiny corner of an old whiskey distillery, Soma now has two chocolate factories in Toronto, Canada.

Cacao Region

Bundibugyo, Uganda

Bundibugyo is a small district in the Western Region of Uganda, directly bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Subsistence agriculture and animal husbandry are the two major economic activities in the district. Despite its small size, it’s also the largest producer of cocoa in all of Uganda; the local enterprise of Latitude Trade Co. has played a large role in bringing their organic cacao to the craft chocolate market. Most of the cacao farmers in the region live off of earnings week-to-week and only have very small plots, so Latitude Trade Co. has organized 6 rural collection points for farmers to access each week and get paid immediately for their harvest.

Cacao Estate

Semuliki Forest

Located in Bundibugyo, Western Uganda, Semuliki Forest Cacao is grown by over a thousand organic smallholder farmers in the region, more than half of whom are women. Latitude Trade Co. (LTC), the company that processes and exports this cacao, has organized 6 rural collection points for farmers to access, where every week they can sell fresh into the network and receive cash payment immediately. Latitude's centralized fermentation facility and warehouse is strategically located in the village of Bumate, where they can receive optimal natural light and limited impact from rainfall. All Semuliki Forest cacao is certified organic.

Bright Fruity Chocolate

This chocolate really wakes up your mouth with bright dark fruit flavors. The tasting notes say raisins and figs, with which I agree, but sometimes it feels more like blackberries. One of my favorites, so far.
