This gold award-winning dark chocolate bar, from Mokaya Plantation, boasts a new recipe that increased its cocoa content from 66% to 75%! Situated in the Chiapas region, the cradle of cocoa, it extends to the border of Guatemala. Almost 2000 years before this era, the Mokayas, a fishermen's indigenous people, were fond of a drink made from cocoa pulp or seeds: the first “chocolate” in the world, called “kakawa”.

Maker

Michel Cluizel

The “Goldsmith of Chocolate” Michel Cluizel bars have wide appeal among chocolate lovers. Michel Cluizel and his family started as a chocolatier, dating back to the late 1940's. He started producing his own chocolate in 1997, creating a single origin and single estate bar from high quality ingredients. While Michel Cluizel is a much bigger enterprise than many of the craft chocolate makers we feature on this site, this classic European chocolate has its roots in pure craftsmanship. The company is now on its third generation of chocolate makers. They have maintained a quality line of single origin chocolate plain and inclusion bars that continue to win awards.

Cacao Region

Chiapas, Mexico

Chiapas is the southernmost state in Mexico, bordering several Guatemalan states & the Pacific Ocean to the south. The state is generally tropical, but thanks to the convergence of land and sea, it's home to several microclimates, including deep valleys, mountainous cloud forests, and beautiful beaches. Chiapas is also notable for being home to one of the largest indigenous populations in the country, as the ancestral home of several distinct indigeneous Mayan groups, most of whom depend upon agriculture to survive.

Safe choice

It's probably not the most unusual or exciting chocolate, but a really good and solid one. Very rich, creamy and velvety, well-balanced taste, full flavor but not too bold or bitter - you cannot go wrong with it. I also like the packaging - it looks nice and makes it easy to store the chocolate after opening if you don't finish it in one go.

Exceptionally smooth.

It’s hard to believe this is 75%, it is that smooth. Hints of honey balance it out nicely.

Smooth and simple

A smooth, simple cocoa with low acidity. A solid cocoa flavor, slightly tannic
