Almost all the cocoa grown in Vanuatu comes from this one island: Malekula. This sparsely populated island is a two-day boat journey from the capital of Port Vila. But the rich volcanic soil here yields a cocoa bean with a complex flavor and hints of cherry, white grape and citrus that makes the journey worthwhile.

Their name firetree, is a nick name for the flame hued pods found on the cocoa trees that are found on these volcanic islands. Firstly, the packaging is perfection itself - well designed, beautiful and informative. The bar itself has a smoky aroma, luxurious texture and bright taste - it flowed through the tasting notes exactly for me, first white grape then lemon and cherry and this indescribable nutty woody smoky something. Incredibly delicious.

Volcano Chocolate Is Good

This was part of the monthly club, and I’m so happy it was. I definitely tasted red fruits, but it’s not astringent at all. Honestly, it surprised me. The company says their beans give a “distinct depth and complexity,” and that’s exactly what this bar has. There are so many layers of flavors that create one beautiful chocolate. It’s also very smooth, but it has an emulsifier (I doubt it’s needed, but then I’m just a chocolate eater, not a chocolate maker). As it turns out, volcanoes make good chocolate.

The packaging is delightfully crafted to blend tasting and visual art into one. As suggested, I definitely tasted notes of lemon, grape, and cherry, but I also got subtle hints of dried plum. The texture is crazy smooth, it's like silk on the tongue! Such a unique blend of tasting notes, you'll keep nibbling to chase after the experience.
