Maker
Omnom ChocolateIceland’s only bean to bar chocolate maker, OmNom was started by former chef Kjartan Gislason and Óskar Þórðarson . Inspired by the bean to bar movement in the US, Kjartan started experimenting with making chocolate in 2014. At first it was just an experimental concept, until they began receiving positive feedback from the very beginning. OmNom has a small location in Reykjavík, Iceland, and every step of their chocolate making is handcrafted. All OmNom chocolate is crafted from organic cacao beans and Icelandic milk. Each of their ingredients are sourced sustainable locations and are certified organic. The fun brand name was inspired by the sound Cookie Monster makes when munching down on cookies.
Cacao Region
Morogoro, TanzaniaMorogoro is a large state in central Tanzania, known for its hot & humid weather and its large game preserves. The main source of cocoa in the region comes from the Kilombero Valley, the base of a central fermentary called Kokoa Kamili, which was founded in 2012. Since its introduction ot the country in the late 19th century, cocoa in Tanzania has been almost exclusively grown by smallholder farmers, and before the entrance of Kokoa Kamili, these farmers had very little incentive to produce better cocoa.
Cacao Estate
Kokoa KamiliStarted in 2012 by friends Brian LoBue and Simran Bindra, Kokoa Kamili is one of the few African-origin cocoas which have been universally praised around the world. The team, which is based in Tanzania’s Kilombero Valley, has achieved a remarkably consistent post-harvest process, setting a standard in the region by buying wet beans at a premium and fermenting & drying them in a central location. This garners them an exceptionally fruity and rich cocoa, grown right in the nation’s Udzungwa Mountains National Park. Kokoa Kamili now works with nearly 3000 farmers in the region, all of whom get paid a premium immediately for their wet cacao, lessening their workload while also increasing their income.
Love the bold brand design - the packaging is cool and fun and the envelope closure very convenient. Very light color for a 70% bar. Subtle fruity aroma. To me, the flavor is plummy and raisin-y and hazelnutty at the same time though I shared it with a friend and she got raspberry and yuzu and a hint of hay. The texture is outstandingly melty and smooth. Very delectable.
I definitely enjoyed this bar - a nice mix of fruitiness and richness, with flavors of dried fruit, rice pudding, marshmallow, raspberry, caramel, and dark honey. If you are interested in Tanzania bars, also check out the ones from Dandelion, Monsoon, and Solstice.
Perfect chocolate can be enjoyed in this bar. Not too dark but not for those who want milk chocolate. Great bar for an after dinner treat in small portions!
I enjoyed the first bunch very much for the length on the palate as well as the beautiful flavors. That’s why I re-ordered.
This is easily some of the best chocolate I have ever tasted.
