Sumba Island

Sumba Island in East Nusa Tenggara produces cacao from the Gaura Estate, a 815-hectare family farm recognized with a 2015 Cocoa of Excellence Award. The beans are Criollo and Trinitario grown in volcanic soils, creating complex spicy-sweet flavor with floral and dessert chocolate notes. Small-scale family plantations began here around the 1980s, now contributing distinctive cacao to the global craft market.
