Mbingu is a 70% dark chocolate made with cacao grown in the Kilombero Valley, in the heart of Tanzania. Trees grown in the valley are certified organic, farmers in Kilombero have been practicing organic farming for generations. Kokoa Kamili buys wet beans, straight from the pod, from smallholder farmers paying the highest price in Tanzania.

"Mbingu", Swahili for Heaven is the small town where the beans are fermented and dried. The location borders on the Udzungwa Mountain National Park famous for its bird, primate, and Savannah elephant species.

The painting on the box is designed as a Kanga, the beautifully patterned cloths worn by woman in Tanzania. Each design and pattern symbolizes a message. Inspired by the brilliant work of the cacao farmers and team at Koako Kamili, it's a cacao pod kanga!

Soma

Soma was founded by David Castellan and Cynthia Leung in 2003. A rarity in the industry, Soma are adept at both chocolate making, and also a fantastic chocolatier. At the time, ‘bean to bar’ chocolate wasn’t necessarily even a term! Anybody who knew how to make chocolate were those who worked for big chocolate companies. Soma was one of the first to tackle the micro batch chocolate bar production. Besides their wonderful line of chocolate bars, Soma also uses their chocolate to make ganache for truffles, and other chocolate treats. Soma's high quality chocolate bars have been awarded multiple times over the years. First starting off in a 400 square foot tiny corner of an old whiskey distillery, Soma now has two chocolate factories in Toronto, Canada.

Cacao region

Morogoro

Morogoro is a large state in central Tanzania, known for its hot & humid weather and its large game preserves. The main source of cocoa in the region comes from the Kilombero Valley, the base of a central fermentary called Kokoa Kamili, which was founded in 2012. Since its introduction ot the country in the late 19th century, cocoa in Tanzania has been almost exclusively grown by smallholder farmers, and before the entrance of Kokoa Kamili, these farmers had very little incentive to produce better cocoa.

Kokoa Kamili

Started in 2012 by friends Brian LoBue and Simran Bindra, Kokoa Kamili is one of the few African-origin cocoas which have been universally praised around the world. The team, which is based in Tanzania’s Kilombero Valley, has achieved a remarkably consistent post-harvest process, setting a standard in the region by buying wet beans at a premium and fermenting & drying them in a central location. This garners them an exceptionally fruity and rich cocoa, grown right in the nation’s Udzungwa Mountains National Park. Kokoa Kamili now works with nearly 3000 farmers in the region, all of whom get paid a premium immediately for their wet cacao, lessening their workload while also increasing their income.
