Based in Vietnam, Belvie Chocolate is a bean to bar maker that handcrafts their chocolate bars with Belgian techniques. They source cacao from all over Vietnam, then stone grind and produce their chocolate in small batches. Their award winning chocolate also contributes to the preservation of cacao trees in Vietnam. They take the husks of the cacao as fertilizer for the trees to help maintain a green environment. Belvie uses Trinitario cacao beans only from local farmers to help restore cacao trees throughout Vietnam and mostly importantly, to help support the farmers.

Ben Tre is a province in the Mekong Delta of southern Vietnam, where cacao arrived in the late 19th century and thrived as development organizations encouraged planting 15 years ago. Cacao trees grow among coconut groves, benefiting from fertile delta soil and abundant water. The resulting beans have notes of honeysuckle, fig, and citrus.

Love these!

Lam Dong, Ben Tre, Dong Nai, Thien Tuy, and Tien Giang are my favorites. These bars are SO delicious! I do wish they were thicker, but the flavor comes through strongly even with the thinness, and they do give a satisfying snap. Unique and satisfying flavors in all bars. Fruity but balanced.

Fun to experiment

Even though I didn't love all the Belvie flavors, I still loved having all these bars to experiment with. It's a great way to get to know the range of chocolate from Vietnam. I did comparison tastings with between the Marou and Belvie minibars just for fun! I knocked off a star because the bars are a little thin and I felt the flavor didn't seem to express itself as well as a bigger bar.

Great way to taste a variety

These bars give you more chocolate than most mini bars and I feel like the thin-ness is perfect: definitely not too thin, so there is plenty of snap, but thin enough that you can really taste the bar and let it melt on your tongue.
I enjoyed all of the bars I tried. The Dong Nai has a sweet prune-like taste. The Tien Giang also has a sweetness but is a bit earthier and the Thien Tuy reminds me of maples/molasses.

Clean, beautiful outer packaging encasing impressively origami-ed golden foil which, in turn, enrobes sticks of finest chocolate magic. Glossy textures and tantalizing flavors. Good amount of bar for the price.
