Maker

Maraná

Maraná is a Peruvian chocolate company that produces bean to bar chocolate from the finest cocoa. Their selection of Peruvian cocoa comes from three regions - Piura, San Martin, and Cusco. All of their chocolate bars are made with certified 100% organic ingredients. Zulema and Giuseppe, both founders of Marana were formerly part of the corporate world for 10 years until they were looking for something else to satisfy their interests. One day while talking to Giuseppe’s aunt that lives in the USA, she mentioned that she has seen a surplus of chocolate with Peruvian cacao. That had sparked some interest to the pair and started doing research about cacao and visiting cacao farms. That’s when they discovered their passion for Peruvian chocolate. Zulema and Giuseppe are committed to helping farmers receive a better quality of life by working directly with them. They find by teaching them sustainable farming, improving their techniques for better optimization of their cacao beans, they are able to guarantee only the finest cacao beans. Marana’s packaging for their bars pay homage to Peruvian culture and the hard work cacao farmers dedicate their lives towards. Since selling their first chocolate bar in 2015, Marana has proudly received multiple awards for their bars.

Cacao Region

Cuzco, Peru

Cuzco is both a city and a department of Peru, famous as the home of the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu. The department is located in the southeast of the country; much of the landscape is made up of high-altitude settlements, especially in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, known as the gateway to Machu Picchu. Cuzco’s primary earnings come from tourism, but gold and natural gas extraction are also important. Native types of corn and quinoa, as well as tea and coffee, are the principal agricultural focuses, albeit at lower altitudes.

Cacao Strain

Chuncho

Chuncho cacao encompasses around a dozen related cultivars of the Upper Amazon Forastero group, now considered to be native to the Quillabamba Valley of central Peru. They’re believed to have been domesticated by the Matshiguenga people, whose members were ancestral inhabitants of the Valley. Chuncho trees bear small yellow fruits with small beans (less than 1g per bean), known for their high fat content and very high-altitude growing region (400m-1400m).

Interesting tasting chocolate, but not anyone's favorite

Slightly rough, lots of bright, acid tastes, and a little bit smoky afterward. Interesting if you're looking to investigate those flavors deeply -- I brought this to a chocolate tasting and people definitely noticed the variety of flavors in the different bars, but no one _enjoyed_ it.

The box and packaging are gorgeous.
