Maker

Qantu

Qantu is a chocolate maker based in Montreal. Qantu was started by Elfi and Maxime in 2016. This pair fell in love with bean to bar chocolate after researching cocoa after their first plantation visit in 2014. The immense passion and pride of the cocoa producers inspired them to create bean to bar chocolate. Qantu focuses on Peruvian cacao for the moment, which is where Maxime and Elfi met over a decade ago in Elfi’s home country. The name “ Qantu” (pronounced “Kantu”) derives from the name of the national flower of Peru and Bolivia. The word comes from the native language of the Peruvian Andes, Quechua, it represents a symbol of unity and hospitality.

Cacao region

Piura

Piura is a northwestern Peruvian department known for its rare Criollo cacao varieties, particularly the Blanco de Piura (white cacao), which is grown exclusively in this region. The white cacao is characterized by exceptional aroma, flavor, and low acidity, with roughly 30 to 40 percent albino beans. Piura's desert forest region with moist clay soils creates distinctive malt, sugar cane, and nutty flavor profiles unique to this terroir.

Cacao estate

Norandino Cooperative

Founded in 2005, the Cooperativa Norandino represents more than 7,000 families producing cocoa, coffee and panela across the north of Peru. Its mission is to improve the livelihoods of its member families by offering access to local and international markets. The cooperative is large by Peruvian standard, but it’s driven by its core values of transparency, equality, respect, responsibility, democracy and quality. All of Norandino's producers are Organic- and Fairtrade-certified, but because it represents cacao producers from so many regions of the country, chocolate makers are able to source Norandino cacao based on area of cultivation or even type of cacao. This allows makers to invest in a sustainable and equitable system while still maintaining control over their unique flavor proposition.

Cacao strain

Piura

Piura is a fine flavor cacao strain from northern Peru's Piura region, one of Peru's historic cacao-growing areas. It is valued for its regional distinctiveness and its role in preserving Peruvian cacao heritage within the broader fine flavor cacao family.

Not a fan

I wasn't a fan of any of the Qantu bars I got. If you like them, this might be up your alley. Hard to explain but there was a sort of bitterness; the chocolates were very snappy but not smooth or melt-in-your-mouth. They also changed the most in the fridge (in a very short amount of time), which made their shelf life seem difficult to manage.

Absolutely flavorful

This bar is absolutely flavorful with a strong note of cherry as described by the maker. You can almost taste the change in the note of cherry in your mouth. Great melt!

Happy in TN

Gotta try all four award winning Quantu bars. I leaned towards Chaska a bit but I would not have wanted to miss this or the others. So smooth, such a great long lasting mouth feel and aftertaste. I can't imagine this not being a hit with any chocolate lover.

Qantu Morropan 70%

Ok, I love Qantu. I tried all the Elfi and Maxine bars. I think they showcase all the real potential of Peruvian cacao. This bar is very complex with a good balance between acidity, sweetness, and astringency. Besides the fruity tasting notes described by the Maker, I detected honey, lemon, lime, blackberry, raisins, pecan nuts, and malt undertones too. Very good!

Qantu + Morropan = Delicious

My wife and I like fruity chocolate, and Morropon cacao is consistently a favorite for us. We've also had a handful of bars from Qantu and have been very impressed by them all. This bar is right up front with the raisin, cherry, plum, deep fruity flavors and aromas. Beautifully balanced, delicious from start to finish. Highly recommend this bar and this brand.

Fruity and tart

Aroma of raisin and tobacco. Silky texture. Tart and fruity (fresh and dried plum) with a bit of black tea. A good bar, will definitely plan to try more from Qantu in the future

Excellent bar!

My gold standard for chocolate is Patric 67% Madagascar. Alan McClure (Patric) has not been producing since the pandemic began and I was not happy with the other bars I tried...until I received the Qantu Morropan 70%. The flavor is excellent, cherry resolving to I slight nuttiness. The texture is smooth and glossy with a good snap. I ordered 10 more bars. Worth the cost.
